The beautiful town of Orford, New Hampshire is located in the northern portion of what is known as the Upper Valley Region, a region shared by both New Hampshire and Vermont.
Orford is bordered on the West by the Connecticut River, one of ten designated Heritage Rivers in the U.S. Orford's Eastern border is hugged by the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.
Orford is a true 'bedroom community' to the greater Dartmouth/Hanover region. Just 15 miles North of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Orford has convenient access to one of the finest medical facilities in the world. Being only 10 miles North of the Dartmouth College Campus, the area also enjoys many cultural benefits such as hosting many nationally recognized speakers, films, ballet and art exhibits.
Located in the Village of Orford, Twin State Real Estate is situated at the corner of Main Street and Bridge Street with the Connecticut River running behind it and the famous "Ridge" of seven Federal style homes out its front door. To its right, on the other corner of Main Street and Bridge Street, is the village general store, which has been in operation for almost 200 years. It was precisely this view, that charmed Washington Irving to such an extent during his visit to Orford in 1832 that he said, "In all my travels in this country and in Europe, I have seen no village more beautiful than this. It is a charming place - Nature has done her utmost here." It should be no surprise that the village of Orford is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
As a result of Yankee ingenuity, the townspeople of Orford recently collaborated with it's neighbors in Vermont, to form the first K-12 interstate school system in the country, the Rivendell school district. In fact, the old Orford Academy, built in 1851, is used as a part of the Rivendell school district, making it the oldest school building still in use in the state.
Orford is also the home of two nationally recognized tree farms, as well as a world champion cow!
Still largely a farming area, Orford offers beautiful pastoral views along the Connecticut river, as well as awe inspiring mountain views along its many winding country roads. Its natural beauty makes Orford and the surrounding area a recreational haven. The neighboring towns of Fairlee and Thetford offer two popular lakes as well, Lake Morey and Lake Fairlee. Lake Morey is known countrywide as the home of The Lake Morey Inn, a fine resort hotel with a golf course, swimming pool, and other fine recreation facilities. The entire Upper Valley Region offers outdoor enthusiasts many activities to choose from in addition to golfing, swimming and boating; such as biking, hiking, horseback riding, downhill and x-country skiing, snowmobiling, skating and good old fashioned sledding.
